How It Works

  1. Demand/Invoke Appraisal

Disagree with your insurer's valuation? Invoke the appraisal clause in your insurance policy to begin the process.
  2. Hire an Expert Appraiser
Select an appraiser from our team to represent you in the dispute. We'll review your case and handle negotiations with the insurance carrier's appraiser.
  3. Reach a Fair Settlement
The goal of appraisal is to reach a compromised solution that both parties can agree upon. However, you likely retain your rights under the policy if you cannot settle the dispute through this process.

What is insurance appraisal?

Appraisal is an alternative dispute resolution process included in most property insurance policies. When you and your insurer disagree on the value of your claim, appraisal lets each party hire an independent appraiser to negotiate a resolution.

How is this different from hiring a lawyer?

Appraisal is faster, less costly, and less adversarial than filing a lawsuit. It focuses only on determining the value of your claim, while disputes over coverage may require legal action.

How much does it cost?

Invoking the right to appraisal under your policy doesn't cost anything. However, you will need to pay for a qualified appraiser to serve on your claim. JRS appraiser fees range from $500.00 to $5,000.00 based upon the size and complexity of the claim. Our appraiser fees are flat-fee arrangements, ensuring you never have unexpected expenses. We also bill actual value for expenses incurred, such as travel.

Who pays for the appraisal process?

Each party pays their own appraiser, and the costs of the umpire, if needed, are shared equally. This ensures a fair and balanced resolution.

How long does the process take?

Once both appraisers are selected and the process begins, most disputes are resolved in weeks, not months.
